Glossary — TheBaseStep

Terms we coined to name specific TheBaseStep mechanics. If you landed here looking up what one of these means, this is it.

What is the DROP Protocol?

The DROP Protocol is the minimum viable version of a habit — the smallest action that still counts as having done the habit that day, defined in advance for days when the full version isn't realistic. In TheBaseStep, completing the DROP Protocol keeps your streak active the same way completing the full habit does.

What is the Happiness Chest?

The Happiness Chest is the reward TheBaseStep releases on every check-in, in a variable size (common, rare, or epic) and never empty. It's the app's uncertain-reward mechanic — we openly acknowledge the underlying principle is the same as the variable-reward design used in gambling; the difference is the chest is never empty.

What is the What-The-Hell Effect?

The What-The-Hell Effect is our name for the behavioral pattern where, after breaking a rule someone was following strictly, the common reaction is abandoning the effort entirely instead of picking it back up the next day. It's why traditional streaks make so many people quit — and why TheBaseStep's streak never resets to zero.

Why doesn't the streak ever reset?

Because completing the DROP Protocol on a hard day counts the same as completing the full habit — the streak rewards consistency, not perfection. It exists specifically to prevent the What-The-Hell Effect.
